Porcelain Crowns

With crowns, physical discomfort and embarrassing aesthetic problems associated with damaged teeth will be a thing of the past. Crafted from strong, durable porcelain, a dental crown is customized to cover the entire surface area of a tooth in order to restore it to its normal size. In addition, a procelain crown strengthens and improves the appearance of a tooth and can be used to reinforce teeth that are cracked or structurally weak. A dental crown can also be used to hold a loose filling in place, as well as to conceal misshapen or discolored teeth.

Bridges

Have you noticed strain when you bite? Or do you have difficulty speaking because of misaligned teeth? If so, a dental bridge may provide an excellent solution to your oral health problems. Almeida Aesthetic Dental Center uses both removable and fixed bridges, or partial dentures, to fill gaps created by a missing tooth or teeth. A removable bridge usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. By contrast, a fixed bridge is held in place by porcelain crowns that are customized to fit over the natural teeth on either side of a gap. This bridge is then cemented into place so that it cannot fall out or be removed by hand. Not only does a dental bridge fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents surrounding natural teeth from changing position. For more information about bridges or crowns, contact us today.

Inlays and Onlays

More conservative than crowns, inlays and onlays are two methods of restoring normal tooth structure after decay or other damage. Inlays and onlays are known as indirect fillings because, unlike standard fillings that are completed in a single dental appointment, they are crafted from durable porcelain in a laboratory and bonded to the surface of the tooth during a second appointment. And unlike standard fillings, inlays and onlays do not weaken the tooth structure, but actually strengthen it. Once the restorations are in place, the tooth can bear 50 to 75 percent more chewing force. The primary difference between inlays and onlays lies in where they are placed; inlays are intended to repair damage within a tooth while onlays are customized to cover the tooth’s outer surface area. Both inlays and onlays are effective in repairing relatively extensive tooth decay or damage without having to replace the whole outer portion of the tooth, as with a crown.

Dentures

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. At Almeida Aesthetic Dental Center, two types of dentures are available: complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” Made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, a conventional denture is ready for replacement in the mouth about eight to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.

Dental Implants

The dental implants you will receive from Almeida Aesthetic Dental Center look and feel so natural that you may forget you ever lost a tooth. No longer do patients have to hide their smiles because of spaces from missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that Dr. Donald or Dr. Adam Almeida place into the jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more effective in preserving the structure of original teeth than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. In addition, dental implants represent the most aesthetically pleasing method of replacing missing teeth modern dentistry has to offer. If you are missing teeth and would like more information about dental implants, contact us today.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is a painful condition involving the joint that opens and closes the mouth. The temporomandibular joints are the small joints in front of each ear that attach the lower jaw to the skull. The disorder may affect the jaw joint or the muscles surrounding it. The exact cause of TMJ disorder is often unclear. Possible causes include excess tension in the jaw muscles, faulty alignment between the upper and lower teeth and jaws, and disturbed movement of the jaw joint. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include pain and clicking sounds with movement of the jaw.

Although there is no one treatment that will fully cure TMJ, there are a variety of treatments that will help to alleviate pain and prevent further damage from occurring in the jaw area. Therapy may involve a special splint, called a neuromuscular orthosis. This is often used to recreate balance. Subsequently, a semi-permanent splint may be necessary. Later, comprehensive orthodontics including braces and tooth restoration may be required.
