A Dentist’s Indispensable Tool

Highlands Ranch cosmetic dentistry

Providing quality dental care is much easier for Denver area dentists when they have extensive, comprehensive information about their patients’ oral health – and pictures are far more accurate than written notes. To go a step further: pictures that show what’s going on below the visible surface of your teeth and gums are worth even more than a thousand words. So, along with a thorough oral exam, most dentists want complete and up-to-date x-rays.

The frequency of x-rays is largely determined by your age as well as the state of your oral health. Because children are growing and they experience more changes to their teeth, they usually need x-rays more often.

X-rays also help dentists find cavities, evaluate gum health, and identify any major changes to your teeth and mouth.

Safety is an important issue that all dentists consider when ordering x-rays, because low levels of radiation are used to obtain the images. Many important precautions are taken to limit exposure, such as putting leaded aprons and collars on the patients.

It is critical that women in Lone Tree inform their dentist if they are pregnant because special considerations should be taken.

Tooth Replacement For The 21st Century

Highlands Ranch tooth implant supported dentures

Not everything was better back in the “good old days.” Take dentures, for instance. Dentures have been around for generations and have certainly improved the lives of thousands of Lone Tree people who have lost many or all of their teeth.

However, Grandpa’s traditional false teeth are not the prime tooth replacement. Traditional dentures can impede many critical oral functions: chewing, tasting, swallowing, talking, and smiling.

You may know denture wearers who have stopped attending social activities because they are embarrassed by dentures that are far from inconspicuous. Some have even stopped eating their favorite foods because their dentures diminish their capacity to taste and/or chew.

I have incredible news for Lone Tree residents with missing teeth: Dentures have evolved!

Implant-anchored or implant-supported dentures are far superior than conventional dentures for many patients. So much better, in fact, that there really should be another term for this revolutionary tooth replacement system – a term that doesn’t include the word “denture.” (If you can think of a good name, let us know.)

There are two types of implant anchored dentures; removable and permanent. No adhesive is required for either system. With the permanent type, screw retentions are anchored in the jaw to serve as attachment points for the denture. Permanent implant-supported dentures are very stable. Moreover, they are usually less pricey than replacing each missing tooth with an implant. (The cost varies depending on the number of implants necessary and other factors.)

Screw retentions require enough bone thickness to allow the implant to securely mesh with the existing bone. Unfortunately, some patients who have been missing teeth for a long period of time have experienced bone recession. For patients who lack the required amount of bone, mini-implants may be an alternative.

Removable implant anchored dentures have a locator attachment which allows the wearer to snap the appliance in place. Some patients prefer this type because they can remove them at night for cleaning. Countless Lone Tree patients who have traded in their traditional dentures report that their implant anchored dentures have greatly improved their life.

The wonderful benefits of implant-supported dentures include:

Increased comfort
Natural appearance
Normal tooth function
Improved durability
Better bone retention
Denture relines not
required
Minimal gum irritation
No denture adhesive needed

For more details about dental implants, call 720-306-8057 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Almeida. Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center is located at 8683 E Lincoln Ave, Ste 200 in Lone Tree. We have been providing quality care and personal attention since 1977.

Crooked Teeth And Cavities

fast braces Lone Tree

Many dental patients in and around Denver hold the belief that orthodontists only change the look of your teeth. Consequently, they think that the only reason to find an orthodontist is if you are interested in cosmetic dentistry.

The fact is that your ability to clean your teeth is enhanced when your teeth are straight and uncrowded.

When uneven teeth begin to crowd together, it becomes difficult to make vital daily cleanings effective. And, when your teeth aren’t cleaned properly, problems with plaque build-up, cavities, and gum disease commonly ensue.

If you are curious if your teeth are crowding or if your bite is not aligned, then you need to visit your Lone Tree dentist. Your dentist can evaluate whether or not you need to see an orthodontist, and then recommend one near you.

Also, if you feel that the appearance of your teeth is an issue, ask your dentist about a smile makeover. There are numerous innovative cosmetic dentistry procedures completed daily. These include teeth whitening, veneers, dental implants, crowns, and more!

Hello, my name is Drs. Dr. Almeida. My warm and comfortable local dental practice, Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center, is located at 8683 E Lincoln Ave Ste 200 in Lone Tree. I am dedicated to healthy, remarkable smiles. We are currently accepting new patients, so if you are in or around Denver, give us a call at 720-306-8057.

Our warm and comfortable team can answer any questions you have about our top services, which are:

Relax. It’s Not The End Of The World.

root canal sedation Lone Tree

Today’s Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center post addresses one of the most feared dental procedures: the infamous root canal. If you are told that you need a root canal, don’t panic. Your dentist recommends this procedure when it is better for your tooth than the alternatives.

A successful root canal (or endodontic treatment in dental-speak) can save a tooth and prevent the need for an extraction followed by a dental bridge, dental implant, or gap in your smile.

If, after a thorough evaluation, we determine that a tooth is going to need a root canal, we will explain the procedure and costs that are involved. Root canals are carried out to save an infected tooth. If not treated, abscesses and complete tooth loss may occur.

During the procedure, your dentist will remove the nerve and pulp, and then clean and disinfect the interior of your tooth – the canal. The next step is filling and sealing the cleaned area with a special rubbery material, and then protecting the restored tooth with a crown or filling.

Root canals have the reputation of being painful, but this is not the case anymore. There are several effective pain management methods available today at Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center. From local painkillers and numbing agents to oral sedation, we will make sure you are comfortable during the procedure. Once the infected tissue is removed, your dentist will focus on helping the oral site heal, which may require another visit.

If you have a tooth that is bothering you, call Drs. Almeida & Bell now at 720-306-8057 for an appointment.

If My Gums Bleed, Should I Stop Flossing?

bleeding gums Lone Tree

This is a key question occasionally asked by patients at Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center. The answer, however, is “No!” Bleeding is probably a sign that you need to clean your teeth and gums more thoroughly – not leave them alone. It is impossible to clean effectively between teeth without using floss or an interdental brush.

If you have never flossed before, your gums might bleed the first few times you use floss. The bleeding may be due to dangerous gum inflammation, the beginnings of gum disease. Keep flossing gently and the bleeding commonly stops within a week or two.

Gingivitis (gum disease) and the more advanced periodontal disease is extremely common in Colorado and around the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that half of American adults aged 30 and over have periodontal disease. https://www.perio.org/consumer/cdc-study.htm

If you don’t make flossing a habit, and your gums become sore, swollen, and tender, it could result in gum disease. The good news is that, unlike tooth decay, gum disease can be reversed with improved oral hygiene.

It is essential to correctly use dental floss to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth:

  1. Cut a length of floss about 18 inches long.
  2. Securely wind each end around your middle fingers.
  3. Take hold of the floss with your forefinger and thumb leaving about two inches to work with.
  4. Thread the floss between two teeth.
  5. Hold the floss tightly against the side of the tooth and move it up and away from the gumline. You want to clean the space between the tooth and gum without pulling more gum tissue away, so it’s vital to scrape up and out of the pocket.
  6. Move the floss around the tooth to clean every surface – especially those that your brush can’t reach. As you use a section of floss, unwind from one hand to access a clean piece. With 18 inches, you should have enough to provide a clean section for every tooth. If you run out, that’s okay. Just toss the used piece and cut a new one.

Some people find it easier to start on one end on the upper teeth and clean each gap one by one until they reach the end on the opposite side. Then repeat for the bottom row. Whatever process you opt for, make sure you clean around every tooth, including the back surfaces of the last molars.

What if you continue flossing for a few weeks and still notice bleeding? Call Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center at 720-306-8057 to schedule a consultation. Our dental staff will carry out an extensive examination to determine the cause of the bleeding.

At Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center, our goal is to help patients keep healthy teeth and gums. Our dental hygienists not only complete the most thorough dental cleanings, they also educate patients on proper brushing and flossing. If you have a child who needs extra help learning how to brush and floss correctly, schedule an appointment with our Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center child-friendly team.

No Dental Insurance? Prioritize Spending To Afford Dental Care

dental financing Lone Tree

Millions of Americans don’t have dental insurance, and many Colorado employer plans have limited benefits. Some Lone Tree people who fail to get adequate dental care say “It’s too expensive.”

If you are really living below poverty level, this excuse may be valid – but if you have an average income, you can probably shift your priorities to find money in your budget to invest in a healthy smile.

You have probably heard of the “Latte Factor” which refers to the surprising amount of money that adds up if you buy a caffeinated beverage every morning. Even if you don’t drink coffee, you probably have a personal habit that costs a few dollars daily but adds up to hundreds of dollars a year. Soda pop, beer, an eight-dollar deli sandwich, a game of golf. How about personal grooming – manis, pedis, facials, and professional hair coloring? What about the income you spend for convenience – pizza delivery, ATM fees, heat-and-eat meals? How much do you spend on premium cable, video game rentals, full-price movies, and season tickets to Denver sporting events?

If you have foregone dental exams, cleanings and treatments because you think it’s too pricey, I hope this Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center dental blog post has opened your eyes to purchases that may be far less important than a healthy smile. Remember, if you ignore dental problems, eventually they will require more extensive treatments. Filling a cavity is relatively inexpensive, a root canal costs more, and a dental implant is a major investment. What is a tooth worth? Every single one is priceless. And don’t forget that dental troubles impact the energy of your entire body.

Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center in Lone Tree provides competitively priced quality dental care including veneers, crowns, bonding, orthodontia, and teeth whitening. Ask us about dental financing options.

Suspect A Bite Problem?

malocclusion examination Lone Tree

Hello! I’m Dr. Almeida, DDS, of Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center in Lone Tree. Thanks for visiting my dental blog. The topic of today’s post is malocclusion – literally – “bad bite”.

Edward Angle, a pioneer in modern orthodontics invented the term malocclusion. Malocclusion is fairly common in the population as a whole but, fortunately, in most cases the misalignment is so slight that it causes no issues.

When you combine multiple teeth on two arches and a jaw joint with a considerable range of motion, it is easy to see how these elements can fail to align properly. In fact, it is a wonder that they work correctly for most people – allowing them to talk, eat, and breathe without giving it a second thought.

There are many causes of malocclusion – some originating with the teeth and some originating with the jaw. Misshapen teeth, extracted teeth, impacted teeth, crowded teeth, and widely spaced teeth can influence the bite. Injury to the jaw can also cause malocclusion as well as improperly fitting restorations and other dental appliances.

Children with a normal bite can develop bite troubles with prolonged pacifier use, thumb sucking or bottle drinking. In rarer cases, oral tumors can move a bite out of alignment.

The treatment for malocclusion depends on the cause. Orthodontics can move teeth into alignment to fix bite problems. Overcrowding often requires extraction of one or more teeth. Misshapen teeth that affect the bite can often be repaired with crowns or dental bonding.

If the jawbone is significantly misshapen or misaligned, maxillofacial surgery may be needed. Jaw surgery is a serious undertaking with significant risks and a long, painful recovery. While the jaw heals, it is secured with wires and screws. Ouch!

If your jaw hurts or you observe unusual wear to your teeth, it is vital that you are examined by a professional. Call 720-306-8057 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Almeida.

Our warm and comfortable dental team has been serving patients at our comfortable Lone Tree office since 1977. We can give you more information about malocclusion, teeth whitening sedation dentistry, or porcelain crowns.

Dr. Almeida also advises Lone Tree parents about critical issues such as tooth development, thumb-sucking, water fluoridation, dental sealants, oral sports protection, and orthodontia. If you suspect that your child has any degree of malocclusion, schedule an exam ASAP. Untreated bite troubles in children can inhibit proper nutrition, breathing, tooth development, and speech development.

Are You Getting Your Dose Of D?

pediatric dentist

Most Denver people know that vitamin D is important for healthy teeth and bones, but many of us fail to get adequate amounts. Today’s article is a friendly reminder to our patients – especially expectant mothers – about the importance of vitamin D.

Here is a sampling of vitamin D findings from around the web:

“Several recent reports demonstrate a significant association between periodontal health and the intake of vitamin D.” 1

“Researchers who took a second look at a series of clinical trials conducted on 2,000 children in several countries between the 1920s and 1980s determined vitamin D — which we often garner from sunlight — was associated with around a 50 percent reduction in the incidence of tooth decay.”2

“Inadequate vitamin D levels in pregnant women may be associated with dental caries in their children during the first year of life.”3

“The sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, but it is hard to quantify how much vitamin D you get from time in the sun and the risk of skin cancer may outweigh the benefits. Food first, says Baylor College of Medicine dietitian Keli Hawthorne. “Supplements can fill in the gaps but it is always better to try to meet your nutritional needs with foods that contain fiber, phytonutrients, and so much more,” Unless you enjoy a diet that includes fatty fish or fish liver oils, it may be hard to get enough vitamin D naturally without eating fortified foods or taking a supplement. “The major dietary source of vitamin D comes from fortified diary, along with some yogurts and cereals,” Hawthorne says. Mushrooms, eggs, cheese, and beef liver contain small amounts.” 4

I’m Dr. Almeida of Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center in Lone Tree. I encourage all of my patients to practice preventative medicine by eating a healthy diet complete with all vital nutrients. At Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dental Center, we offer the full complement of dental services in our well-appointed office. Ask us about teeth whitening, porcelain crowns, or porcelain veneers.

Foaming At The Mouth: Are You Brushing Right?

Lone Tree affordable family dentist

In today’s post, let’s examine some details about brushing. One key to activating the value of toothpastes is creating foam when thoroughly brushing.

Working up a good foam is brought about by pre-wetting the toothbrush, then attacking at a 45 rather than 90 degree angle. The foaming aids in dislodging food debris from nooks and crannies in the mouth. Go ahead and swish it around at the completion of brushing to pick up any stragglers. The abrasives in toothpaste are designed to polish the teeth without damaging the enamel.

Because of the abrasives, soft toothbrushes are best for proper brushing. Harder bristles can put the enamel and gum line at risk. When the gum line recedes from aggressive brushing (or any other cause) a patient may experience tooth pain, increased build-up and decay, tooth structure weakening, and in severe cases, tooth loss.

The fluoride in the toothpaste promotes remineralization when the paste has been rubbed around on all surfaces of all teeth in the entire mouth. This takes time so make sure you brush for at least 2-3 minutes.

Additionally, remember that flossing is essential and rounds out the 5 minutes each day to give you healthy, pain-free chewing for years and years to come.

To recap:
Wet soft bristle toothbrush
Use fluoridated toothpaste
Brush at 45 degree angle
Brush gently for 2-3 minutes
Cover every surface of every tooth
Swish around in mouth before spitting out
Floss gently around each tooth and don’t overlook the back surface of the rear molars
Rinse out debris
